Right To Play UKRight To Play uses specially-designed sport and play programmes to improve health, build life skills, and foster peace for children and communities affected by war, poverty and disease. Working in both the humanitarian and development contexts, Right To Play has projects in more than 20 countries in Africa Asia and the Middle East.
Welcome to Right To Play UK! Our role is to promote Right To Play in the UK, raising awareness and funds in order to support our humanitarian development projects.
Chemmy Alcott, the UK’s premier female skier and one of our most recent Athlete Ambassador recruits has joined forces with fellow World Cup skier, Julia Mancuso, to climb the highest free standing mountain in the world, Mt. Kilimanjaro, in June this year.
In a bid to raise £15,000 for Right To Play, Chemmy and Julia have challenged themselves to trade their winter warmers for khaki pants and take on the monstrous challenge of climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. They will spend 4 long days trekking upwards through rainforest and scrubland before attempting the last, steep dawn climb to reach the summit in time for sunrise.
Chemmy and Julia are both passionate about Right To Play’s mission to use specially-designed sport and play programmes to improve health, build life skills, and foster peace for children and communities affected by war, poverty, disease. They will actually witness Right To Play’s programmes in action when they visit one of our community projects in Tanzania. Chemmy said, “This will serve as fantastic motivation for Julia and I to push all the way to the summit. We can’t wait.”

Everyone at Right To Play would like to congratulate our athlete ambassador, Liz Yelling, for once again winning the National Cross-country Championships.
This is Liz’s 4th success in what is one of her favourite races of the season. “This is a massive event for me. There is always a great atmosphere because everyone from the U13s to the professionals all compete on the same course on the same day.” Liz once again broke the course record, a feat she repeated at the Reading marathon recently too.
This has been great preparation for the London Marathon in April which will also serve as the Olympic trials. Naturally Liz is aiming to be in the team for Beijing, “Everything is going to plan so far and I hope to be the first Brit across the line in London.” Everyone here at Right To Play would like to wish Liz all the best in her bid to reach the Olympics. Good Luck!

James McIlroy in Action
James McIlroy, who joined Right To Play as an Athlete Ambassador in 2007, won a closely fought race to win the UK Indoor Championships over 1500m in Sheffield on February 9th.
The event also served as the trials for the forthcoming World Indoor Championships in Valencia in March. James, who recently visited a Right To Play project in Liberia (see below), was delighted with the result and said afterwards, "Everything is going according to plan. The 1500m is an unfamiliar distance for me but I am looking forward greatly to competing against the best in the world in Valencia."
He hopes to get close to the British record when he races in Birmingham and Ghent over the coming weeks.
Mo Farah, Right To Play Ambassador
Mo and I to flew to Liberia via Brussels where we met Pamela Rice and Martin Barnard (from Right To Play’s office in Toronto) at the departures gate. We were introduced to two other Right To Play ambassador’s Whitney Ping (table-tennis) and Adam van Koeverden (canoeing) who would be joining us on the trip. On arrival in Liberia we were immediately faced by two familiar scenes (if you have ever seen Africa portrayed on TV, that is). First was the oven-hot blast of air as we left the plane and second was the chaotic, disorganised scene at the tiny airport. Fortunately this is where the clichés stopped.
