Ben Pegna's Diary

Hello from Accra, Ghana

So, we're here on the first joint Right To Play/Chelsea Football Club trip to the field. What a place to be, and what an experience to be on the first trip.

So, we're here on the first joint Right To Play/Chelsea Football Club trip to the field. What a place to be, and what an experience to be on the first trip.

It's our second day here in Accra, having arrived on Tuesday night from the UK. The flight passed without event, however, the arrival at the airport was a little different!

To cut a long story short, we couldn't get out of the door at 'Arrivals' and eventually we had to be escorted back to the 'air side' of the airport where we then had to hop on a bus to take us to the hotel.

It was only a minor delay but I think it gave some of the younger players of the Chelsea party their first real sense of the magnitude of their presence here in Ghana.

We had briefed them prior to the trip at the Chelsea training ground, but I don't think it had really sunk in with the majority of group just how big this was going to be. We travel to Tamale later today and again, they will see just how much the people here love football, Chelsea and especially the group visiting them in their own towns.
Michael Essien with local children in Ghana The training session at the El-Wak stadium was a high point of the trip so far.Chelsea coaches

took a session with around 85 kids, whilst 100 local Right To Play coaches watched on and took notes. It took some organising and the Right To Play team here in Ghana have done and continue to do a fantastic job.

The session was closed to the public and allowed some great interaction between the Chelsea group, the kids and Right To Play coaches. Everyone seemed to love it, and for me, a highlight was definitely seeing the personal side of the Chelsea players spending time with the children and visibly making a difference to them.

The Chelsea players and staff have made a big impression on me as well as the people of Ghana. I can see that this is not just a PR trip to them, they really want to help and make a difference to the people they meet.

The next session on our trip will see our Right To Play coaches demonstrating our specially designed (red ball) games in the field to the Chelsea coaches and I know everyone is looking forward to this.
